For fans of The Night Angel Trilogy and fantasy author Brent Weeks

Mr. Weeks,

Many great trilogies/novels tend to have prequels, obviously explaining the history or the event(s) that led to the series. I was wondering if you had any intention of writing more about Durzo Blint, possibly creating a novel of his experiences. I searched for it using the search function, and didn't see a thread regarding this. If you could get back to me, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Kurt

Thanks. I hope Mr. Weeks responds to this. :)

It'd be a great idea.

Right now, I'd definitely shy away from doing prequels. Don't sue me if I change my mind in fifteen years, but the reason why I wouldn't want to do it is because you'd already know what's going to happen--at least a lot of the major plot events, just from the hints and bits of history that I've told you about already in this trilogy, and that I will reveal in the next Midcyru trilogy. Now, great books have been written where you know the end that's coming--like the Iliad. But I'm not Homer. (For one thing, I can see.) Clearly, there are also some things you can do where it's like "hey, you THOUGHT you knew what happened, but really this other thing happened." That's okay once in a while, but after a while, it just feels like cheating.

On the other hand, I've already done most of the thinking and story building for all of what happened to Durzo et al. so it would be an easy book to write. :P But right now, no plans. And I won't change my mind unless I could come up with a cool way or many cool ways to make it more of a story than simply fleshing out what I've already hinted about in the NA trilogy.

I miss durzo. I am reading NA book 2 now. It's awesome so far and still without Durzo, but there is that void now.

I was actually contemplating posting this as a topic, then I found your thread. Very glad someone else agrees! I think it would make a brilliant prequel. I feel like there is so much more we could learn about him, maybe including some of the lesser or unknown bits about him?

I must say I would enjoy it, but I do prefer for a world to continue to evolve rather than just back-track. Plus, it's been awhile but how many other kakari's are still out there? So much left to tell to consider going back to the past :P.

In my opinion... Durzo makes the book as good as it is, I absolutely love his characters personality and i would love to know what really went down wen Jorsin gave him the black kakari and asked him to be outcasted and also to find out about Durzo wen he was prince Acealus, before he became an immortal. I don't think you would need to right another trilogy for him, just maybe one book would do it.

The guy lived for 700 years. There has to be so much more that could have happened than what you fleshed out in the NA trilogy :P

But I agree with the others. It wouldn't have to be a series. Hell, just one book (or maybe even some short stories) of Durzo's past excursions would be excellent to read.

Don't hold me to this, but I have thought that some short stories about Durzo would be pretty awesome to write when I'm between big projects. Weird thing is, I honestly haven't written that many short stories. The form is a bit different, and I wouldn't want to write ones that suck--especially not with Durzo. But, it is something I want to do. Maybe after I finish Black Prism. Heck, I even have a short story publisher who's interested.

So... possible, but don't hold me to it. :)

I won't hold you to it.

But maybe if you do decide to do it, you can create a compilation of all of these short stories. Make it similar to The Silmarillion:)

I won't hold you to it, but I hope you follow through with something like this at some point =)
