The Official Brent Weeks Network

For fans of The Night Angel Trilogy and fantasy author Brent Weeks

Okay, honestly, Mr. Weeks. You've admitted you play X-Box. You admitted you play video games. I think you admitted you played Fable as well. Here's an important question I have for you...

Do you ever make your own characters in certain video games?

For example, do you ever make a Durzo Blint in Elder Scrolls: Oblivion? Do you ever make a Kylar Stern in Fable?

If you think about it - tons of us do it. We come up with characters and create them in other games and try to make them as in character as possible. (Some of my characters actually spawn from me making them in other games - or rather, I name them from a character I named in a game.) Some of us even make characters in games based off of other people's characters. (I won't lie - whenever I pick up Oblivion again I'm going to make Durzo Blint and try and get him into the Dark Brotherhood.)

So what about it, Brent? Don't be ashamed to admit it! :D What do the rest of you think?

I made Dorian, Feir, and Solon in fable 2. Good times. Oh, sorry. I'm not Mr. Weeks... yet. Muwahahaha!

I haven't finished Way of Shadows yet, but I can easily see Dorian (from what I've seen so far) in Fable. I've only played Fable 1 and I can already see him as the sort of pure Will user...like I usually was in that game. Lawl. Whenever I get my X-Box working again I'll see if I can create any of the characters on Fable 1.

Like I said, I see Durzo in Oblivion SO easily. With all the garlic he chews, at least it'll be easier for him to kill off vampires, right? ...Sucks if he turns into one though.

When I first found The Way of the Shadows, I went home and made a character of him, class; Assassin. Got him to level 25. Read the book, found out its 'Wetboy', and I just could not take it so I deleted my 30 hours of work and started over with Kylar as a User Generated class. Wetboy. Then I finished first book and I had to delete that character for Kylar Stern, Night Angel. Curse my compulsiveness!

And for Fable try making a neutral swordfighter that has max physique for Feir. Thats what I did and it was actually pretty fun.

Okay, okay, I'll 'fess up. I've done it. Usually though, the storyline of the game forces me to not be able to play the character like themselves. (Take this annoying character and walk them to point X, to fetch option Y, then protect them as they walk all the way back--slowly--to point Z. Can you see Durzo chilling out through that?) Or it's just too weird. Durzo or Kylar in Fallout 3? Nah.

If the stealth system on a game isn't good, I don't like to be that sneaky of a character, either. And I haven't seen great stealth since some of the earlier Splinter Cell games, which I loved.

Ha! I knew it! You're just like us after all - you're actually a human! (Unlike a lot of authors.) *Writes this down in notes. Checks something off in "Might Be Human"* Makes..characters in video games.

That makes sense, considering most games don't allow much freeroaming or much detering from the story. (Honestly, Durzo wouldn't even accept that. That'd be like him dealing with the annoying, bratty king. Even if he was somehow forced to - I imagine him chewing on garlic and playing with knives the whole time, not being a happy campter. That's why I like the Fable games - there's still the path of evil to go through.) Oh come on. Durzo and Kylar would be fun in Fallout 3. Could you imagine Durzo or Kylar in Rock Band, too, just shredding a guitar or on drums? I think it'd be fun to put characters in situations that they'd never actually be caught in (that they'd probably kill us for if they were real).

Hey, Brent! How about Night Angel characters in the Sims? I'm sure that would be perfect! ;D Lots of screwed up relationships, lots of dying, and lots of visits from the Social Bunny to Kylar because of him getting overly depressed. *Ducks and covers*

As someone suggested below too - there's also Soul Calibur, if you're interested in making them in fighting games. At least there's not really a "story" you need to follow and there's a lot of cool moves you can perform with a sword. Not exactly blue glowing moves, but eh, close enough? XD I created a lot of my original characters on Soul Calibur III - they aren't the exact same thing, but it's fun nonetheless!

That makes sense though - especially with how descriptive you get with the stealth in the Night Angel Trilogy. Splinter Cell's stealth seems to be a really good to fit. I haven't played Assassin's Creed but that reminds me of it as well. The only stealthy game I REALLY played was Metal Gear Solid. That had hanging from walls and being pressed up against walls, at least, and relying on camouflage and light conditions too. (But not really too fitting for the Night Angel trilogy kind of stealth.) Personally, I like Oblivion because, though you can't hang from ropes or walk along afters to try and be stealthy, there's still a lot of magic to help hide you, even render you invisible sometimes.

Hey! Maybe this could be a good incentive to have the Night Angel Trilogy made into video games. The characters could be played right and the stealth system could be made perfectly to fit the series. *Wink wink nudge nudge* You know you want to~.

ANYWAY. *Coughs* Back on topic....Nice to know that we're not alone, in creating fictional characters in games though. Either way, I think it's fun, even if they don't exactly fit in~. Thanks for answering my little question, Mr. Weeks!
(Edit: Yikes, this comment ended up being really long. xD >> << *SHUFFLES AWAY*)

Hey Mr. Weeks, have you played assasins creed? Being a person who just wrote a book on the topic of assassination. It has a amazing story might I add. True it Does not have the best gameplay but the second one is supposed to be much better. Leonardo da vinci is your best friend who makes weapons for you. And when you stab some one its hard to pull out your blade. There is a scene where if you thrust a spear through someone they slide slowly down the spear. Here are the links so everyone can see.

Not too long ago I made my lead character Azoth in Soul Calibur III's Chronicles of the Sword.

Reply to This

Wow - I never imagined Azoth in Soul Calibur before. xDDD That's perfect though! I should try my attempt at making him as a normal character, maybe. Maybe even Durzo. That'd be fun to fight as them. I usually make tons of my own original characters in Soul Calibur III. I think I already have two memory cards full of characters (since I have it on PS2). >>! Time to make more room~.

Haha that's exactly what happened to me, I must've beaten it close to seven times, but creating the different characters and having their storylines in your head is always the funnest thing about it.

I've seen a few mods replicating the Kylar traits in Oblivion for PC, but im still search high and low for the story line quest for the trilogy! If anyone knows of a good one please let me know!

I made Kylar, Durzo, Vi, Elene, Jarl, Logan, Hu, and Momma K in Dynasty Warriors 6: Empires. It's Create-a-Warrior mode is actually quite suitable for making characters from novels. Half the fun is making the characters look like how they were described in the book :P
