The Official Brent Weeks Network

For fans of The Night Angel Trilogy and fantasy author Brent Weeks

Valiant

Is anyone working on their own art/novel/creation - can you share?

I'm sure there are others who have dreamed of their own plots and story devices. I've always tried to keep my 'amazing' ideas to myself, so I can't ask anyone to share their best, but if you feel like giving a short glimplse into one of your own creations, please share.

I feel like adding a statement to this thread. DO NOT POST YOUR WHOLE NOVEL ON THE INTERNET. If you do so, your novel will be considered published and no publisher will buy it. The best you can do is post a few hundred word snippits here and there. I cringe at the idea of posting whole chapters now a days.

The only safe place to post chapters/short stories etc are on a password protected forum/site. That you have to sign up for.

I hope I haven't stepped on anyone toes with this.

I read the excerpt that was on your page and it wasn't too bad. Its my personal opinion that authors need councilers or someone to help them through their writing. All writers think their writing is bad at some point. Those who think its good without any worry tend to be bad as well though. A lot of our ego goes into our writing, so I believe. Thats why when we get criticism, and Brent Weeks has demonstrated this too, we can go on the defensive very fast. It is OUR story written how we think it is best. If anyone tells us otherwise, it can really hurt. Almost as bad as a kick in the groin.

Your writing wasnt too bad but its my opinion--from a nobody...that if you write like that, very soon you'll wear our your excellent prose. It'd be hard to fill a 400 page book with similar prose. Theres another writer I cant think of the name, a member of the forums, whose writing is more like a narrative than story. I believe someone called it a DnD campaign. Its my opinion, yeah ur getting a lot of it today lol, that personality and character progression drives a story faster than just straight story.

No one cares about the adventure of someone they dont like or cant compare to.
Just please, dont make another Harry Potter. XD Sorry J.k Row.

I agree on the Da Vinci code - trash, trash, trash book when I read it before it was big. Then all of a sudden, every idiot thinks it's a true story.

Very true - by trash, I'm not saying it's a bad book, I'm saying it's a trashy throw-away book which is easily devoured, without investing much time, energy, brains or emotion. I didn't care much about the characters, it was basically balls-to-the-wall action from go to whoa, with a brief attempt at brains in the backstory which, for me, failed miserably.

It's a trashy read.

I'm just surprised by how seriously everyone took it. When the movie came out, the wife and I went to see it at the drive in so we could laugh and mock all the way through it without bugging everyone else. 'twas a fun night.

Alright I gave in an posted a part of chapter one of the series I'm working on. (I have a feeling it a little scary and still full of errors.) You do have to be a friend to view the pecie. You should be able to find it on my page here.

"Who struggles with the settin when they write?"
What part of the setting? Like scenery? History? Can you be just a tad more descriptive Mr. Odin? :D

"Hands up, figuratively as I cant see you, if you do?"
What? XD

And as for alternate history....hate it. Unless its like Japanese history with mythology. Hercules is sooo overused and American history sad to say, is lacking the mysticism it should have.

What do mean believable countries or cultures? Whats not believable about them?

I like alternate history. I found Harry Turtledove a strangely engrossing read.

There's this huge althistory wiki I found a while back on wikia, there's a couple of interesting timelines presented there (I of course, love the one where in 1983 Nuclear War is started by Russia retaliating to a glitch on their radar, world ends and mighty Australia rises from the ashes, although my town gets nuked :*(

Yeah, we're wise enough not to bother overstretching and making an empire, we'll leave that to chumps like your lot who're slowly fading into history ;P Muahahahahahah....

...what, to supply New Zealand with entertainment?

BTW, to keep this relevant to topic, obviously Odin and I are in an ongoing writing exercise to get the best insult out of one another :)

/me just realised that my comment would be funnier if there were Kiwis on this board...
