The Official Brent Weeks Network

For fans of The Night Angel Trilogy and fantasy author Brent Weeks

I wasn't surprised to find this topic here. While I think that its a great idea to not only promote the books, but also add to the user-created content for Morrowind, I have a slightly different agenda.

When I got into the second book, I saw great potential for a console (possibly a PC too) game. Upon reading the third book, I saw it as a challenge and (with the proper amount of work done) a successful franchise.

I have a rather light (in my opinion) background in game design. I can easily come up with gameplay mechanics and concepts for just about every aspect of the story, which would likely follow Kylar from Azoth/Kylar from beginning to end.

I have prior work experience in the games industry. I was a tester, but I worked with the designers and learned quite a bit from them, though not as much as I would've liked. Getting back on topic, I still have a few of those contacts, so issues and questions can get some kind of response. While I can't guarantee professional development, I think it would be a fun endeavor.

Who knows, once the design doc is complete, Mr. Weeks may just find a publisher/developer to pick it up and finish it.

So, I guess what I'm looking for now is an artist and or 3D renderer to help bring some of this to life. Publishers love content after all. I can't say that anyone who's involved would ever see a dime for the work, personally I just want to flex my design muscles and see if I can hack it.

Anyone interested in helping out with Project Night Angel?

Mr. Weeks, what do you think? If some of your fans presented you with a (near)complete design document in a few months would you be interested in trying to find someone to create a game out of it?

This would strictly be a "whenever you have the spare time" kinda project. More for fun, less for profit, but if there's a payment at the end I doubt anyone would decline it haha.

Alright, I'm done babbling. Discuss!

I like Aidan's idea. Is more specific and specially since Kylar cares about the guild rats. Way to go Aidan...

Why not just use checkpoints?

check points work really well for when kylar doesnt have the ka'kari but i think if there is a good way to use the kakari reincarnation then it would be better to use it. wouldnt some players be confused about the whole resurrection storyline if it never came up in gameplay?

You guys have come up with some amazing ideas, and I'm going to present the issue to my friend in the industry (he's a Sr. Designer, worked on Oblivion when he was with Bethesda) hopefully he can give me some more ideas, keep them comin' though!

Another question/idea: What kind of characteristics would a weapon/item will obtained if the Ka'kari is placed on top? Besides turning black...

Hmm, thought about this one for a bit and I think I have it figured out. It'd be as strong as Retribution, but it would slowly corrode and eventually become useless (just like in the story) This balances things out a bit when you lose Ret and have to make do with whatever you can get your hands on.

Maybe I'm not quite understanding the problem with the death system, but couldn't it be solved with a "Game Over" screen and a force reload of an old save (Kind of like what they do in Oblivion). Not necessarily calling it a resurrection then. Then have the resurrections happen at the points in the game that correspond to Kylar's deaths in the books?
Or maybe to deal with it in a slightly more clever way, have the free roam ability, kind of like what they do in [Prototype], but make it so you can interact with people and make friends, kind of like what they did in the Fable games. (Spoilers) And these friends could "Disappear" as you die ingame. (End Spoilers) I know Kylar doesn't make too many friends in the book, but it could be a little bit of a workaround.

If the resurrections were dropped except in specific circumstances, gamers who hadn't read the books would be scratching their heads. Actually, fans of the book would likely be peeved as well.

I think the friends idea could be worked in.
It could be done kind of like Assassin's Creed. You help people out and they help you out. Like the surly tough guys that'll grab onto knights that are chasing you, or people that give you information during your contracts. They aren't necessary, but they help.

This way, you'll be deterred from letting yourself get killed (because then you lose that assistance you might need in the future) and the resurrection system will stay true to the story.
What do you guys think?

I think is genius!!!

That's just me...

Now, would you be able to select who dies or it will be just random?

Random makes things more interesting I think.

Cool....
I think is great to have it that way.

but u cant tell the player that people are dying for you until later on the storyline or u spoil that big twist, which was one of my favourite parts of the storyline. So would it still work if these "friends" died but u were never informed of it? and just noticed it through gameplay at some points? and will the wolfs antechamber have any interactive segments or will it just be cutscenes?
