The Official Brent Weeks Network

For fans of The Night Angel Trilogy and fantasy author Brent Weeks

I wasn't surprised to find this topic here. While I think that its a great idea to not only promote the books, but also add to the user-created content for Morrowind, I have a slightly different agenda.

When I got into the second book, I saw great potential for a console (possibly a PC too) game. Upon reading the third book, I saw it as a challenge and (with the proper amount of work done) a successful franchise.

I have a rather light (in my opinion) background in game design. I can easily come up with gameplay mechanics and concepts for just about every aspect of the story, which would likely follow Kylar from Azoth/Kylar from beginning to end.

I have prior work experience in the games industry. I was a tester, but I worked with the designers and learned quite a bit from them, though not as much as I would've liked. Getting back on topic, I still have a few of those contacts, so issues and questions can get some kind of response. While I can't guarantee professional development, I think it would be a fun endeavor.

Who knows, once the design doc is complete, Mr. Weeks may just find a publisher/developer to pick it up and finish it.

So, I guess what I'm looking for now is an artist and or 3D renderer to help bring some of this to life. Publishers love content after all. I can't say that anyone who's involved would ever see a dime for the work, personally I just want to flex my design muscles and see if I can hack it.

Anyone interested in helping out with Project Night Angel?

Mr. Weeks, what do you think? If some of your fans presented you with a (near)complete design document in a few months would you be interested in trying to find someone to create a game out of it?

This would strictly be a "whenever you have the spare time" kinda project. More for fun, less for profit, but if there's a payment at the end I doubt anyone would decline it haha.

Alright, I'm done babbling. Discuss!

@Fipe I didn't, holy crap! Thanks for reminding me. :O

@Archangel My original idea was for a "torch carrier" type character after Kylar, but I'm still kinda torn. I'm basically jotting ideas down for both haha. I swear, I can't ever decide on something. I just find some way to do everything at once, at the cost of my own sanity.

You welcome Victor... Just trying to play my part here...

i personally would prefer to see a game based on kylar than on a "torch carrier" though both ideas are interesting. obviously ur going to have to add missions and such but i would like to see some of the situations that come up from the book. I dont remember how often kylar uses one but i remember at least durzo picks up a bow at one point, and it was interesting how he used his talent to load faster, always having an arrow in the air. if bows are involved they should defs have that talent reloading it would be SO COOL. or even with other throwing weapons, it would be interesting if u could like use ur talent to make your blows stronger, throwing knives go farther and whatevs, but maybe theres a bar that runs out or something? i dont know but what are your plans for talent in the game
if u need a beta tester im here

THIS IS AN AWESO)ME IDEA. I agree. Of course, i'm just a young kid... but im thinking of gettingg into the game industry, especially after reading these books. I was thinking along the lines of Assassins creed style, with some actual RPG aspects- Skills, Abilities, Levelling up, etc. Anyway, that's may take on this subject.

Just a idea but maybe when you make friends they could help or give you stuff. Like if u have a rich noble friend he might give you some money, or if u have a poor friend he obviously can't give you money but maybe he can give you some kind of information. That way you feel like your loseing more then some one you might have only made friends with so he'll die for you.

ive been thinking about how kylar timed his breath to his targets, and it often wouldnt be necessary but in quiet places maybe it could make it easier to go unheard. It could pretty simple just pressing b when u hear a guard breath and do that a couple times. I think if u ended up going with the ambient noise meter from the splinter cell games or whatever it was ( saw this in an earlier comment) it could work well in really quiet places

Victor, I have some ideas that I would like to bounce off of you. If you have time, you can contact me through either E-Mail or AIM. My E-Mail is KLoeblich@comcast.net and my AIM is o0 KrYpT 0o. I have experience with game creation. I also play video games in my free time, the majority of the games being RPG's. I think that the Night Angel Project could become one of the most renowned video games of this time, given that the proper amount of time and work is invested into it. Please contact me back if interested.

-Kurt

Sorry I haven't updated in a while. Went on a bit of an e-hiatus (moreso for my health, had to get back into the habit of working out in the morning and not just jumping on the computer and getting devoured by the webmonsters haha)

David - Thanks for the offer, but at the moment we have no content, its all just a bunch of ideas we're bouncing off each other for fun and maybe a teeny bit of notoriety.

James - Seems like you've got the same idea a lot of us have. Check the previous pages for the current thoughtstream on how the game could work.

Semih - Whoa, awesome idea, can't believe I didn't consider that. Something is really wrong with me lately, all the most obvious ideas are eluding me, think I need a nice long "vacation" (read: weekend in rural Illinois drinking with my friends) Information from poor friends is proven effective from Elder Scrolls: Oblivion when you did the Thieves Guild quests, money might be a problem from the rich friends considering the player could just farm money and buy anything (which isn't really a bad thing, but a challenge is always good right?)

Aidan - Maybe a mini-game of some kind when you're training under Durzo? Gauges and stuff that vary as you get closer to your target while creeping slowly behind him? Something you would prolly see only once because it would be way too complex for an action oriented game.
The ambient noise feature would definitely fit in well though, no doubt there.
*player has to make guard turn around, guard won't. Player throws rock, guard goes to investigate, guard drops dead.*

Kurt - Sure thing man, I'll add you sometime tonight when I'm done with my gaming binge (neglected a lot of friends in various online communities so now I'm playing catchup D: )

By the way guys, if you ever wanna chat live (assuming I remember to sign-in) you feel free to add me on MSN (roninpsychon@hotmail.com)

Or add me on facebook.com/psychon, just remember to leave a message telling me who you are here on the boards so I know you're not a bot or something.

Keep the ideas flowing, I may not be updating as often but I'm certainly reading these and jotting stuff down for the design doc every chance I get. At some point I may talk to a friend of mine about making a forum specifically for an indie development of this game (wouldn't be nearly as awesome as we want it to be, but I'm sure we could pull something nifty off.)

I am sure that many of you guys who play video games have come across games that were converted from books or movies. The majority of them are a disappointment, since they have a set path that they have to follow. They allow very little room to add different ideas and concepts. The last thing we want is this game to be the same way. I suggest that we stay along the storyline of the book, but give options to do things above and beyond what you may have read.

*SPOILER ALERT*

For instance, in Book 2, there is a section where Kylar and Elene have moved to the town with Uly as their "adopted" child.

This portion of the book is very important, but I feel it would be rather boring to play as a gamer. So, I suggest that it is spiced up a bit. Since Kylar sneaks out at night to train, this would be a great time to have a section in the game dedicated to [further] developing skills. You can have "missions," such as saving people from Guild Rats and the Sa' Kage. It's simple things like this that will make or break a game.

It's just a suggestion though.

I have plenty more.
