The Official Brent Weeks Network

For fans of The Night Angel Trilogy and fantasy author Brent Weeks

I wasn't surprised to find this topic here. While I think that its a great idea to not only promote the books, but also add to the user-created content for Morrowind, I have a slightly different agenda.

When I got into the second book, I saw great potential for a console (possibly a PC too) game. Upon reading the third book, I saw it as a challenge and (with the proper amount of work done) a successful franchise.

I have a rather light (in my opinion) background in game design. I can easily come up with gameplay mechanics and concepts for just about every aspect of the story, which would likely follow Kylar from Azoth/Kylar from beginning to end.

I have prior work experience in the games industry. I was a tester, but I worked with the designers and learned quite a bit from them, though not as much as I would've liked. Getting back on topic, I still have a few of those contacts, so issues and questions can get some kind of response. While I can't guarantee professional development, I think it would be a fun endeavor.

Who knows, once the design doc is complete, Mr. Weeks may just find a publisher/developer to pick it up and finish it.

So, I guess what I'm looking for now is an artist and or 3D renderer to help bring some of this to life. Publishers love content after all. I can't say that anyone who's involved would ever see a dime for the work, personally I just want to flex my design muscles and see if I can hack it.

Anyone interested in helping out with Project Night Angel?

Mr. Weeks, what do you think? If some of your fans presented you with a (near)complete design document in a few months would you be interested in trying to find someone to create a game out of it?

This would strictly be a "whenever you have the spare time" kinda project. More for fun, less for profit, but if there's a payment at the end I doubt anyone would decline it haha.

Alright, I'm done babbling. Discuss!

@Aidan: Actually that sounds like a great idea. It would be interesting to see how long it took people to relate death to losing allies. A nice little mental challenge. Good call man!
As for the Antechamber, the first time you go there you'll have a choice between the two doors, just to be funny. The plain wooden one that leads you back to life, and the ornate one that gives you a game over screen :D

@xPH03NIX I had a connection on the inside who got me the job. Its hard getting in, especially now. Depending on the studio, its even harder to work your way up the ladder to a different position I hear.

that kinda sucks! :( but thanks anyway. : )

I have to also add that I like this idea. SADLY I'm not very knowledgeable in creating 3D things or programming myself. Not only that, my art isn't very good or realistic to fit with Night Angel.

HOWEVER, in October, i start college in the major of "Game Art and Design", so maybe I'll be able to help out then. :) We'll see when that time comes and if I manage to learn something.

I also like the idea of a poisons minigame mentioned before. I imagine it being like Cooking Mama or even making Poffins in Pokemon. *SHOT* XD And I LOVE the idea of making "friends" and having them "disappear".

Maybe for dying/reviving, it can be like an MMO. A.k.a. you find yourself a healer or something and sort of make your ressurection point there, and when you die, you lose a lot of health and other things (maybe some equipment or something or money) and end up there. Maybe some healer charges you lots of money for bringing you back to life. *shrugs*

or you can make it cruel and make the person start from the beginning. *cackle* xD

I think you just gave me a killer idea.

Currently not feeling too hot though, so I'll try to find some time to jot down the idea between medications. D:

This should be an xbox 360 game like elder scrolls IV, oblivion

Not to be rough and create enemies, but I prefer PS3. Of course, that is just me. Nothing personal against the 360, I think is great, but I see more potential on PS3....

Ok enought said. I will remain quite for now. Also, don't forget I'm interested in being one of your beta testers.

Guys,

I got an email begging me to respond to this thread--and thus far, I haven't even read this thread. Not because I'm a jerk, and not because I don't want to make an NA video game, but sort of for the opposite reasons. I love video games. I've been gaming since the Atari 2600 and Intellivision. I have definite ideas about games and game stories, and I totally love stealth games (Thief, Splinter Cell, etc) and role playing games. And I'd LOVE to see what ideas you all have come up with, too.

Here's the thing. I have to be super careful about copyright stuff. Some authors do this by just saying, "No, you guys can't talk about this on my forum, get the hell out of here." I don't want to be that guy. It's rude. But here's the fear: let's say someday I get some interest in from a video game company. Well, I'm sure that you guys have mentioned probably every possible idea, or that at least there would be SOME overlap. So, one jerk decides to sue because he "came up" with the idea of doing a Night Angel stealth game. Then I have to hire a lawyer, it costs me thousands of dollars, and the video game company gets spooked and backs off... and no game gets made.

Is this likely to happen? No, not at all. But it could happen, so I have to kind of steer clear of these discussions. If I ever do get serious interest from some game company, I'll hire a lawyer and see what he or she tells me--whether I have to never read this thread, or if I have to get you all to sign waivers, or what. So, until then, I'm going to have to be absent... Sorry, it sucks for me as much as it sucks for you, I'm sure. Maybe more, because I'm curious about what you all have come up with. Anyway, that's why I'm gone. Just for legal paranoia, I have to either banish you or banish me... so I thought it was more polite to do it this way.

Sorry all, and happy daydreaming! (And, someday, I hope, happy gaming!)

Thanks for the input Brent, as of right now its all just an idea. I can't speak for the rest of the contributors, but I can honestly say that if the day came that this stuff came to any use, I wouldn't mind signing some paperwork that stated these ideas were your property. After all, NA is your creation, we're just trying to come up with ways to spread it around and make it bigger. My name in the credits would be good enough for me (and perhaps some autographs... )
I'll keep working on this, if not for the actual game, then for the fun and enjoyment of coming up with new ideas for nex-generation gaming software.

What say the rest of you contributors? We still in this for fun?

Well, now is the perfect time to contribute. :D
Moar ideas!

I'm still in! Mr. Weeks, even if you don't read the thread right now, I understand your concern. And like Victor said, fun and enjoyment is good enough to come up with this. :)

I have a question/idea for you VIctor. Have you thought about the magic wedding earrings? Maybe there is a way to use this to the character advantage at some point as some form of communication or warning.

Just a thought...
