What book/author brought you into the Fantasy Genre?

I have been surfing through the forums of late and have noticed that a lot of people seem to have read RA Salvatore at one point. I have also read Mr. Salvatore's work (Drizzt moreso than the others) but no longer do.

So here is my question: What author or series brought you full heartedly into the Fantasy Genre?

For me it was a mixture of Anne McCaffrey, Terry Brooks and RA Salvatore. Who are yours?

Mine was Diane Duane
So, You Want to be a Wizard?
Not really high fantasy, I guess it would be considered urban fantasy. But, it was something that got be started. From there I really didn't read much fantasy until I got the internet and found Muds (Multi-User Dungeons. kinda the grandfather to the modern day MMOs like World of Warcraft) My friends brought be into a Dragonlance Mud. I hadn't read the books they were based on, so to get a better idea of the setting I was RPing in I read the books and was hook. from there I read the hobbit, tried to read the Lord of the Rings, but just couldn't do it. and it has been countless speculative fiction novels in my reading list since then.

Kinda a long answer but, there you go.

How far into the series did you read Seth?

Margaret Weis stole my fantasy reading virginity. I believe the first series was The Death Gate Cycle and then Dragonvarld.

That is who the other one was! Lol, I was missing a critical author but I couldn't remember her/their names. Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman were the other 2. Ah the memories...

anyways, I got to "The Hunter's Blades Trilogy." Never did like how that one ended...

Hrmmm, my first most significant fantasy read would have been the death gate cycle. Before that, I was solidly in sci-fi territory.

OH, I did read The Hobbit as a kid, so I guess that counts.

Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman's Dragonlance novels were the first fantasy books that I really could not put down (especially the Legends Trilogy).

I also enjoyed the first 2 trilogies by RA Salvatore about Drizzt.

Before then though, I owuld have to attribute my love for SciFi/Fantasy to after school cartoons such as StarBlazers, Robotech, and Battle of the Planets. Geez, I was such a kid of the 80's....

...You and I are going to be very, VERY good friends :D

Seen the Shadow Chronicles? I've not caught it yet, I can tell I'll have to buy off the 'net somewhere. And the planned Robotech live-action movie?

Always glad to have a friend!

Yeah, I saw the Shadow Chronicles as soon as it was released. I do not know if you have Red Box DVD kiosks anywhere in your area, but I have actually seen The Shadow Chronicles for rent in all the ones around here (Chicago area) and they are only $1 to rent for a night.

I remember being so enraptured with Robotech when I was a kid. The local TV station that was carrying it actually started showing 2, back-to-back episodes a day and I thought I was in heaven. Once in a blue moon I will get that way about a show or book. Brent's books seem to be hitting the spot right now, though. I am just into the 2nd book and it is always a struggle to put it down!

For me it was Terry Brooks' The Sword of Shannara.
I picked it up at school one morning, read it, and passed in the report before I went home that night. I have been a big fan ever since. I now own every book in that series.
I stumbled upon The Way Shadow on Tusday past, and am almost done Shadow's Edge.

The Sword is the only Shannara book that I couldn't finish. Have you read the Newest Trilogy?

I started reading Fantasy with Tamora Pierce. I can still reread her books and she's one of the few writers I'll buy in hard back. (Along with Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden's books).
