What book/author brought you into the Fantasy Genre?

I have been surfing through the forums of late and have noticed that a lot of people seem to have read RA Salvatore at one point. I have also read Mr. Salvatore's work (Drizzt moreso than the others) but no longer do.

So here is my question: What author or series brought you full heartedly into the Fantasy Genre?

For me it was a mixture of Anne McCaffrey, Terry Brooks and RA Salvatore. Who are yours?

I honestly have no idea. I remember reading Susan Cooper, R.A. Macavoy and C.S. Lewis at an early age - 3rd and 4th grade. I also remember loving Mickey Zucker Reichart and Anne Macaffrey and Terry Brooks as I got older. My list is extensive nowadays, so I'll skip that. But I really can't remember who was my first. I've always LOVED fantasy (and Sci-fi to a lesser extent).

Out of curiousity, did you buy Melting Stones in the Audio Book version or hardcover?

I've been quite into fantasy since I was younger - do the Redwall books count as fantasy? :) Also read the Hobbit when younger, then LoTR in my early teens, and since then have read pretty much anything I could get my hands on!

I was leary on putting the redwall series up for the exact same reason. So why don't we just descide now and call them fantasy! Martin the Warrior: A Tale of Redwall was definitely the first I read that could remotely classify as fantasy. Tried to read the later tales of Redwall in my High School years but just couldn't envision a mouse fighting a cat any more. Sigh, darn that intellectual growth!

Unless you can classify Animorphs as Fantasy but I will chalk those up under Sci-Fi.

Im just loving how many new book series and authors you're introducing. I've yet to hear of many of them. :)

Lol, I have had a love of fantasy that has been cultivated since i was 9. twelve years of reading has given me a large volume of authors many people have never heard of. I have always liked the little known authors. Those that are just starting out tend to publish the best books. Probably because they are the few original authors out there. I have found that the longer an author has been published, the more mainstream they seem to become. It is either that or they have become what is now called mainstream.
If you are looking for a decent new read just send me a list of your current favourite authors and I could probably send a few suggestions to what you might enjoy.

Hmmm. In my early recollections I'd have to say:

- Thieves World series by Robert Aspirin and Lynn Abbey
- Xanth - Piers Anthony
- White Gold Wielder - Stephen R. Donaldson

Neil Gaiman lol seriously Coraline was freeky
plus Farscape.
And Manga. wait manga came after Fantasy and Sci-fi. Digimon was awesome growing up. but as for authors go, there wasnt much great fantasy writers for young kids back then. Oh Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan was around grade 5 though. OH does Animorphs count? I didnt read big books growing up.
