What book/author brought you into the Fantasy Genre?

I have been surfing through the forums of late and have noticed that a lot of people seem to have read RA Salvatore at one point. I have also read Mr. Salvatore's work (Drizzt moreso than the others) but no longer do.

So here is my question: What author or series brought you full heartedly into the Fantasy Genre?

For me it was a mixture of Anne McCaffrey, Terry Brooks and RA Salvatore. Who are yours?

lol, I haven't read it and kinda picked it out of the recesses of my mind. It might not even be the right series.

there are too many books today, and too few good ones at that.

My dad started me into fantasy by reading me The Wizard of Oz when I was about four.

Oh, you want me to be serious. Okay. Um. Some of my first fantasy books:

His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman
The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper
a bunch of stuff by Tamora Pierce
Then moved on to more serious stuff (The Hobbit, etc.)

Currently reading Kushiel's Legacy by Jacqueline Carey. Fascinating meditation on love and desire in all its forms. (Plus, really cool alternate map of Europe and the Middle East.) Anyone read it?

The first fantasy book I read was The lord of the rings, which I never finish
but I guess what really brought me to fantasy was Garth Nix's Sabriel

My first venturing into the realm of fantasy began with Robert Asprin's "Myth" series. Then, later (about 5th or 6th grade) I got snagged by the Dragon Lance series. It's been a continuous exploration ever since.

Mine? I cannot even recall. I guess it wasn't books, but a movie I saw that lured me into reading fantasy.

For me it was Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series... Haven't looked back since opening the first book! Shame about the mini series... :S

I was reading this and waiting for someone to mention Terry. Amazing books, amazing story. In my opinion one of the best epic fantasy series. I've read most of the others I've seen on this list from other people, and want everyone to gain respect for the Potter as well. lol it gave a new generation a great reason to read, and just for that the series if worthwhile. but TG rules.

It was reading Robin Hobb's Farseer series that made me try other works of Fantasy, but her quality of writing can be difficult to match so it was a pleasure to find Brent Weeks and his unpredictable characters.
