What book/author brought you into the Fantasy Genre?

I have been surfing through the forums of late and have noticed that a lot of people seem to have read RA Salvatore at one point. I have also read Mr. Salvatore's work (Drizzt moreso than the others) but no longer do.

So here is my question: What author or series brought you full heartedly into the Fantasy Genre?

For me it was a mixture of Anne McCaffrey, Terry Brooks and RA Salvatore. Who are yours?

Wizards First Rule ---- By Terry GoodKind

But do me a favor Brent ! Please do not sale the rights to your book for a tv movie.Terry Goodkind got his made by the same guy that did Zena and the Hercules series. I personally believe it soured his books from new readers. The Tv show was so bad .
I had gotten all excited , but was let down by bad graphics and really bad acting :(.The only good actor was the Lord Rhaul and he was from LOR a woodlyn elf .
So if you are looking for a Director ,all fantasy movies in my eyes needs to be done like Peter Jackson. The right director has to have a very Dark with a Ethereal feel that is all fantasy readers see in there minds eye. Not Lavished bright screens ,I mean the Dark ages are the Dark ages right ..

Thanks... O and do not forgot the Dragon Lance Series , Raymond E .Feaist !!

I never did finish the Sword of Truth series. In my opinion, I believe goodkind introduced too many characters by book 5. At that point I just stopped caring about the charactersand their plight.

but that is just my opinion.

I didn't think the show was all that bad. Comparing it to Eragon, which had a way bigger budget, it was pretty good. The monsters suck, and at first the actors are stiff, but if you hang in there it gets better...and Zed gets hilarious...

The series could have gone really well. the problem was that if was bought by DISNEY. Disney = the end of authors rights. TG has Sam Rami direct and Sam Sami was doing a good job, but now even he is just a puppet of Disney. The people now running the show are turning into something for ratings, and have now cut the author and the actual story completely out of the loop. It really is a shame.

I'm convinced though that this series would be be made into an anime by the Japanese (Who can do it right, and do it some real justice.)

For me it would have been Margret Weis and Tracy Hickman with the Dragonlance books, shortly after that would be Salvatore and Drizzt. I had read a little before them here and there but they are the ones that sunk the hooks in good and deep.

Well, for me it was undoubtedly The Lord of the Rings. Other Fantasy I've been partial to include Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea Trilogy and Anne McAffrey's Dragonriders of Pern. I had to punt on both Wheel of time and Sword of Truth. Sword of Truth nearly made me gag with its "message".

Best thing out there right now, fantasy wise, is GRR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire. Too bad he's in no hurry to finish it. :(

David Gemmell and Melanie Rawn for me.

I read Legend followed by The Dragon Prince and that was it, i was hooked on Fantasy and have been ever since. I was devastated when DG passed away.

Hmmm...it would have to be Brian Jaques as a kid, but then Gemmell really captured me in his books. Sword in the Storm...priceless!

Matthew Dickens "The Wayfarer" was my first...
It's more for the Christian crowd, but it was a great story. It was supposed to be the first of like seven, but book two still hasn't hit the shelves after almost ten years...
Then I got a hold of R.A.Salvatore's books, and read every last one, but honestly I couldn't force myself past the 15th page of "The Orc King" after reading "The Way of Shadows"...TOK doesn't begin compare....
